Dr Fanie Buys joined Avimune as a consulting veterinarian in 2000 after spending 20 years as a production veterinarian, first with Festive Farms and later with Earlybird Farms. His early career was spent in research and his Master’s thesis lead to the development of the first commercial fowl coryza bacterin in South Africa. He was also the first person in the world to isolate the pneumovirus that causes TRT in turkeys and ART in chickens. In 2009 he was cited at the World Veterinary Poultry Congress in Morocco as one of 24 researchers who described a new poultry disease the past 50 years.

Dr Buys obtained his BVSc in 1968, BVSc (Hons) in 1980 and MMedVet (Bact) in 1983.

Dr Buys retired as a director of Avimune at the beginning of 2012 and now works for Avimune on a part-time basis, serving clients in the broiler and commercial layer industries.
